There are a lot of people in the world who are lactose intolerant. This simply means that they get pretty uncomfortable after taking dairy foods.
Lactose intolerance comes about because a person cannot properly digest lactose, probably because it has been found that 75 per cent of the world’s population lost their lactase enzymes that digest lactose once they were weaned. Furthermore, with developments in environmental and health consciousness leading to movements like veganism that advocate for human beings to completely abandon dairy and other dairy products, there are more and more people who are looking for dairy alternatives.
The various alternatives to dairy include nut and grain milks like almond milk, oat milk, rice milk and cashew milk among others. There are very many non-dairy milk alternatives available for vegans and for people who just can’t handle dairy. There have been brands that have been paying attention to the trend and responding accordingly. These brands have been putting out good quality vegan and non-dairy alternatives to so many things, not just milk.
One of the things people who are thinking of going vegan think they will miss is ice cream and there is also a perception and socialization that anything vegan tastes like leaves and grass. This may seem like a small thing, but people can get really attached to things that bring them comfort, like ice cream.
The simplest of these is “nice cream” which is made by freezing very ripe bananas in the freezer overnight or for a couple of days and running the same through a food processer to form an ice-cream like frozen dessert. This usually forms the basis for the dessert and people are free to add different flavours to the base to make flavours like strawberry ice cream or pineapple nice cream depending on what you add to the base of this. However, more complex alternatives that are closer to the real thing can be made using milk alternatives like cashew milk, coconut milk, soy milk and other non-dairy milks. The results in this case more closely mimic the real thing and in some cases these alternatives are better in comparison.
In the beginning the non-dairy ice cream alternatives were mainly the purview of vegan companies, or companies created to cater mainly to the vegan market. However, as time goes by, more mainstream ice cream companies have realised that there is a lot to be gained by branching out into non- dairy ice cream alternatives. Companies like Haagen Das, a main stream dairy products company recently released a line of non-dairy vegan ice creams to cater for consumers that do not take dairy products. There is also Ben& Jerry’s which has also ventured into non-dairy ice cream alternatives as a mainstream dairy products company. They are joining some of the pioneers in the non-dairy products business like So Delicious which is a purely vegan company and only offers non-dairy products including milks, yogurt, creamer, cream and other non-dairy alternatives and has been in the business since 1987.
There’s a reason that mainstream dairy companies are starting to offer non-dairy alternatives. The demand for the same has clearly gotten their attention. This goes to prove that one day dairy free ice cream could be just as popular as traditional dairy ice cream.
